The Association

Putting people at the centre of geospatial data

GISIG (Geographical Information Systems International Group) is a European Association and a non-profit SME with extensive experience in geospatial projects.

Founded in 1992, it is recognised as a key reference point in Europe for innovation and technology transfer in the geospatial domain. GISIG was also the first EU-wide association focused on geographic information technologies.

Over the years, GISIG has specialised in capacity building in geospatial data, technologies, and applications, alongside the provision of geospatial services. Its activities span multiple domains, including training, skills development, data interoperability, natural risk mitigation, and nature conservation.

GISIG has successfully coordinated and contributed to numerous EU-funded programmes in education, training, research, and innovation. Today, GISIG leads the SPACE4GEO Large-Scale Skills Partnership for the space downstream sector under the Pact for Skills initiative.

  • Janus, a symbol historically associated with Genoa, where GISIG is based, represents duality and transition. GISIG adopted this symbol to reflect its role as a link between research and emerging technologies, and the world of applications and users, bridging the two “faces” of the geospatial domain.
